the waste piles and press the SPACEBAR. Any card can be put on top of any other
card in the waste piles. However, the cards in the four foundations have to be
build in the proper sequence. An error beep will sound if you try to move a card
on top of a foundation that does not fit the sequence for that foundation.
MOVING A CARD FROM A WASTE PILE TO ONE OF THE FOUNDATIONS: Place the
cursor on top of the card to be moved, and press ENTER. The cursor will beep
each time it blinks. Now move the cursor the the foundation upon which you want
to play the card and press ENTER once more. To cancel an erroneous ENTER press,
just place the cursor on a pile that would create an illegal move and press the
ENTER key once more.
MOVING A CARD FROM A WASTE PILE TO AN EMPTY WASTE PILE: Note a waste
pile is empty when just a white rectangle is displayed on the screen. The
procedure is the same as above. Place the cursor on the card to be moved, press
ENTER, move the cursor to the empty waste pile and press ENTER once more.
WIN OR LOOSE: The computer will "KNOW" when the game is lost or won, and
will inform you as such. If you loose, the deck is empty, no more moves are
possible, and there are no empty waste piles, which constitutes a move, you will
be rewarded with a boo and a hiss, and you may press "N" for a new game or "Q"
to quit. If you win, all four foundations are sporting a King as the top card,
you will be rewarded with a fancy fanfare, and the same options as if you loose
are available.
PROGRAMMERS NOTE: After I finished writing the game, we, our family,
found that we were winning about 1 in every 25 games played. To increase the
odds of winning, I added the option of moving the top card in a waste pile to
another, empty waste pile. After this was done the odds increased to about 1 win
for every five games played, providing that the game is played intelligently and
care is taken in placing the cards in the waste piles, and the "MOVE TO AN EMPTY
WASTE PILE OPTION" is exploited to the full. Our family had as much, if not more
fun playing this game as we did "ACES UP" and "LA BELLE LUCIE". ENJOY.

CALCULATION
Time required: 15 minutes. Change of winning: 1 in 5 games.
THE RULES: Remove from the deck any Ace Two Three and Four. Place them
in a horizontal row. These four "foundations" are to be built upon as shown
below regardless of the suits of the cards. Four "waste" piles are used to
"store" any cards turned up from the deck that cannot immediately be used.

In row number 1, the value of the cards are incremented by one. In row
number 2, by two, and so on. At the start of the game, any Two may be played
upon the Ace, any Four on the Two, any Six on the Three and any Eight on the
Four.
TO PLAY THE GAME: Turn up cards from the "deck" one at a time, placing
each card either on one of the foundations, or if no match is found, on any one
of the four waste piles. Cards may be moved from the waste piles to the
foundation whenever a match becomes available. Only the top card of each waste
pile is available for play. The top card in any one of the four waste piles may
also be moved to another waste pile providing that the waste pile in question is
empty.
TIP: As a general rule, one of the four waste piles should be earmarked
to store the Kings. To put a King on top of another card in the waste pile is
hazardous, since it can be removed only by building upon a foundation that is
otherwise complete. However when two or perhaps three kings have been laid down
in a waste pile, it may be advisable to use all four waste piles for lower cards
and the change that the remaining King or Kings will not come too soon.
The natural policy would be to try and build descending sequences on the
four waste piles that correspond to the foundation sequences. Of course the
cards are rarely so kind as to allow these "builds" to be extended for very far,
but a judicious scattering of sequences of two, three or four cards works
wonders.
As a general rule, avoid laying a card on a pile that contains another
card of the same rank, but this rule may well be ignored to maintain correct
sequence. The finest art revolves around keeping track of how soon or late
certain cards may be needed; how deep and with what cards they may be safely
covered; and whether a card should be played upon a foundation or held back in a
waste pile to develop a sequence for another foundation. The game is won when
all 48 cards in the deck have been moved to the four foundations.
TO PLAY THE GAME ON THE COCO:
The Ace of Hearts, Two of Diamonds, Three of Spades, and the Four of
Clubs have been put into the foundation for you. They are displayed on the left
side of the screen. Immediately to the right are four empty rectangles, those
are the four waste piles. In the lower right hand corner of the screen is the
deck with the top card turned face up. The "CALCULATOR" is displayed in the
upper right hand corner of the screen. The sequence in which the cards have to
be placed on each foundation are printed in red. The next card needed for each
foundation is printed in black.

Since the Ace, Two, Three and Four are already in the foundations, the
Two, Four, Six and Eight are printed in black at the start of the game.
Each time you play a card upon a foundation the card just played will be
printed in red again and the "NEXT CARD OUT" will be printed in black. This was
done to help you keep track of the sequences. Once a foundation is completed,
the King has been placed upon it, the entire row in the calculator that
corresponds to that particular foundation will turn black.
THE CURSOR: The cursor as always is manipulated by pressing the four
arrow keys. The up and down arrows move the cursor up and down, both have a wrap
around feature. The left arrow moves the cursor from the waste pile rows to the
foundation rows, while the right arrow moves the cursor from the foundation rows
to the waste piles. No wrap around feature here.
